As always, thanks so much for being here❤️.
Quick story (with a very important point, swear): On Sunday, I was driving back to Brooklyn from upstate with my friend Cybele and her two small children, and while we were on the Taconic parkway, in the midst of deep conversations and catching barf from the backseat, we ran out of gas. And, I will tell you, running out of gas on a major highway is RIGHT up there on my list of things I fear/dread/hope to GOD will never happen to me, like falling through a metal NYC sidewalk grate or discovering (in horror) a spider has landed on my face in the middle of the night.
We remained calm. With three littles in the car, what else could we do? So, we used whatever fumes we had left in the tank to coast off the nearest exit till we got to an inevitable incline and the car slowed to a dead stop. Google maps dutifully reassured us a Mobile station was less than two miles away, so after I nearly fell to my death down a ravine on the shoulder of the road, I flagged down the first person who drove up to us. A woman and her pre-teen daughter, who pulled up to me cautiously/slowly, suspiciously rolled down her window to hear my plea, and then very casually rolled it right back up and drove away while I was mid-sentence.
Yes, that happened.
The next person pulled over behind us and furiously motioned me into her minivan, which was already bursting with her three sons in full soccer garb (they’d just lost a nearby game and were consoling themselves with Cheetos and Despicable Me…my kind of people). My new best friend Annabella took me to the gas station where I bought one of those red tanks you see other people carrying along the side of the road (because that would NEVER happen to me, right? 🙄), got two gallons of gas, and then even though I offered to walk the 1.5 miles back to the car (even though I wasn’t entirely sure how to even get there), Annabella insisted on driving me back to my friend and our children.
All of this to say TWO things that pose to serve as great LIFE reminders before we get into this awesome flash sale, people:
1. If someone is broken down on the side of the road, clearly distressed, and even perhaps has small freaked-out children in tow…stop your damn car and see how you might be of service.
2. When I woke up the next morning sick as a dog (probably from the cortisol crash of the whole experience), I gave myself permission to spend the entire day in bed. Rewatching “Enlightened,” cozy with my cat Phoebe, meetings CANCELED. And, it was recovery bliss. Because friends, sometimes, we DO indeed run out of gas. And sometimes, we DO indeed need a day off.
Me chilling with Laura Dern, my favorite vintage quilt, and Phoebe.
