The last few days of extreme heat have made me 1). a little crazy in the head and 2). insufferably emo. My friend Suzanne and I took our daughters to see Inside Out 2 yesterday, and at one point, I was crying so hard, Raffi touched my arm and very gently whispered to me, “STOP.”
I am not a summer person. But of course, you already know that. I do not wear shorts or bathing suits unless I absolutely positively have to. My friend Cecilia once said it perfectly about her, but also about me, too: “I look good either fully clothed or completely naked. Everything in between is BAD.” She knows us well.
So, if you, too, feel a little blue and very sweaty come the summer months, you are most definitely not alone. Which is why I started making a “Beach Songs” playlist a few weeks ago, to conjure some of the nostalgia I have for growing up on the South Shore of Long Island, driving to the local tiny Bayport Beach every day and spending my summers riding the ferry to my job on Fire Island. I didn’t include any Bryan Adams or Billy Joel…maybe I should have:). But hopefully, it (gently) packs the quieter mood of summer that makes me the happiest—big skies, warm nights, sitting around a fire for hours with your friends while songs from this playlist are lingering in the background. I hope you love it as much as I do.
And because I have some fun places to go in the next few weeks that are not the grocery store or Target (tho I DO LOVE dressing for a Target run 😎), I wanted to put a few outfits together to give me and maybe all of us a little kick in the pants to not default back to the same pair of cotton trousers every damn day. We have bodysuits, silky slip-dresses, meshy cool skirts….and, of course, one or two voluminous button-downs and vintage things to pull it all together. Without further ado, let’s get into it.
