26+ years on the same mattress...which also happens to be the mattress i got as a wedding gift. i'm divorced now, and i can't help but think sleeping in my old marriage bed isn't exactly manifesting my next great love story. 😂 i think it's time for a new mattress—and a new chapter.
Oh Jenny! We could write a whole essay about this….about how an old mattress can carry your old life with you. Thank you for sharing that…and I hope you throw your hat in the ring for the gifted Helix too♥️♥️♥️♥️
I've been noodling over which new mattress to get for what seems like a decade. It's hard to choose! The sleep quiz is a good idea. I'd love to be considered :)
I hear you. I think because you REALLY have to live with it and use it consistently for a big portion of your life it feels overwhelming to possibly make the wrong choice. The Helix quiz helped a lot…but I feel where you’re coming from and hope you win one, Stacey!
I am never thrilled when I am in the middle of washing sheets and making my bed but, I am always so excited when I remember right before I climb in that it was “Clean Sheets Day” always feels so luxurious to slip in to a freshly laundered and made set of sheets.
Would love to be considered for the mattress if I’m not too late.
Thank you so much for the opportunity! I would LOVE to be entered to win a mattress—especially as I am tiptoeing into perimenopause and personal stuff and just the general state of *waves hands around* can send me spiraling at night.
This one resonated deeply - these perimenopause years are killing my sleep! Look forward to trying some of these tips. Would love to be considered for the Helix mattress please! Thank you!
Sleep divorce. After decades of sharing space with my husband I now sleep alone, in a cool room, fan running, and zero extra noises or movement. I literally had not slept through the night since 1995(first kid) and now I can sleep! It’s glorious
Especially that many of us are also moms, the constant demand on us, both physically and mentally, sometimes means we need to DEMAND alone time in both regards.
I love the way you approach this with so much tenderness towards yourself. The most important thing I do is keep a pen and journal by the bed and write down those little concerns somehow just writing them get them out of my brain enough so that I can sleep. Thank you for such a wonderful post.
Always such interesting suggestions! I used to have no trouble sleeping 8+ hours each nite but then…age. First the night sweats and then not actually being able to get to sleep. It’s rough. I do try to get some protein at bedtime (bone broth mostly) and it does seem to bypass the 2-4 am crash you mention where my brain just won’t shut off. A new mattress would be amazing, so yes, please count me in. Wishing you many zzzzzz’s!
Developing new sleep rituals has been one of the joys of empty nesting (or free birding as I actually like to call it!). I, too, love a bath…there’s something so healing and soothing about the warmth of the water and peacefulness of the space. For ages I’ve been a sleep pants and old tank person but this summer I bought a white cotton nightgown in a larger size and it feels amazing and makes me feel pretty! I’m now on the lookout for them whenever I shop.
Thanks for all the new tips to try. So many goodies, as always. And please throw my name in the hat for the beautiful mattress.
I think tending to our sleep through these big life changes is so important and unfortunately gets deprioritized by everyone else’s needs….im glad you’re doting on yourself now, and psyched you’re in the running for the mattress too!
So many great tips - I’ll start implementing them, especially the journal beside my bed. And Tom Sachs’s “output before input” GOLD! My brain is so neurotic that finding things that actually help me settle takes some work. Also… I need you to come over and help me make my bed as cozy as yours. 😂 P.S. Loft beds get HOT.🥵

The Sleep Divorce is something I wish now I’d included….we don’t talk enough about the added challenge of quality sleep w/another human!
Especially that many of us are also moms, the constant demand on us, both physically and mentally, sometimes means we need to DEMAND alone time in both regards.
It’s been probably 15 years since my last mattress and it’s time!
Yay! It was the same for me….good luck Kary!
