My Undeniable Thing for Vintage Eyewear
Over the years, I’ve had many people stop me on the street about my glasses…and, honestly, I do not blame them.
I got my first pair of glasses at a Lenscrafters in a strip mall on Long Island when I was 15, and I don’t have any photographic evidence of it because allegedly, at one point in the history of civilization, it was not cool to wear glasses.
Can you imagine?
I have 19 pairs of vintage/almost vintage glasses and sunglasses that occupy one small drawer (yes, I just counted them). PS: The silk top was designed by the legendary Celia Birtwell.
Which is funny, since glasses are as essential to me now as, say, speaking or eating cheese. But not just any glasses…interesting glasses. Odd glasses. Perhaps even, dare I say, ugly glasses. But most importantly…glasses that maybe nobody else had or has. There have been two very defining moments in my life that were pivotal not because of the historic or memorable events that were happening then, but because of my glasses.
