Yesss! Your daughter's dress is great and reminded me of my daughter's everything-pink phase and her all-dresses phase. She's 22 and just moved into an apartment down the hall from mine, and her current style is wholly her own, and really weird (in a good, Gen Z way), so I think we're both doing okay by our daughters.

This post also reminded me of being little, and desperately wanting a frilly/fancy dress. My mom did not like frills, did not like lace, did not like florals. It took a ton of begging, but I finally got exactly one (1) frilly dress as a kid -- pale yellow, mini-pleats, ruffles, full, flouncy sleeves -- and boy did it make me glow.

Mine was a pinstriped jumpsuit with a giant strawberry on the front pocket. I loved that thing and wore it every single day I could. When the seams started opening up and it was too short for me, my mom took it away and I remember that feeling like an era was over...Also, my mom, too, didn't love frilly things. I think the jumpsuit was as "frilly" as it got❤️

I love this SO MUCH. LOVE your perfect coat and dress. And I love Raffi's hat with her dress. As a child, I always wore my dad's hats; it was a vibe! It made me feel like a superhero! Now one of his old croc belts, a reddish brown one, worn in, gives me that superhero feeling. I recently found a Prada dress I had loved but not been able to rationalize (nylon, oversized, trimmed with lace) -- in a consignment store. When I want to double up on superhero-ness, I belt that with dad's belt. XOXO Thank you for this special treat.

He-he-hellooo!

This was so sweet. It's always so wonderful to see the worlds our children make out of the littlest of things.

I’m calling that Insouciant Pink! What frilly magic..loved watching Raffi cavort in it and your writing about the impact those special pieces have!Crazy they have the ability to transform our mood, attitude, perception etc Pure magic (my first were white, hip hugging bell bottoms with red kisses in them - 4th grade) A wearable talisman!

I love this, especially the pictures of Raffi in that perfect dress and the wonderful hat you got at Barney’s (Barney’s💔).

I have a vintage Dries dress that is magical. I have long said that it will be the best “thing,” as in object, that my daughter inherits from me.

I could go on about this because I really believe that everyone should have a magic dress, one that does just what you’ve said, instantly makes one feel better - a transcendent dress.

Thank you for this. It’s a beautiful piece. Xo

When I think of the thing from my closet that I “grab when [I] need a host of personal reassurances”, it’s the denim jacket you gave me. Full of pins and love ❤️

This dress is perfect. She is the luckiest to get to wear it. When she does grow out of it ( :-( ) you should frame part of it or something, figure out how to turn it into art because it is so perfect.

Where along the line are we taught to “save” our favorite things so they don’t wear out? This post is such a good reminder to enjoy them and, as you say, let them run their course 💛

LOVE this dress. I've been trying to not buy anything new for about a year --- big fan of secondhand shopping, been using some fun tools to make it easier like the chrome extension that finds me resale alternatives for the items I'm looking at as I shop bit.ly/Phia

Hope this is helpful for people!

Utterly GORGEOUS. The other thing I love about purchases like this (affordable, out there, thrift store) is that you kind of ambush yourself with what you end up loving. You can take little risks and holiday yourself into someone you aren’t normally.

Totally....it's incredibly liberating when most of fashion is kind of the opposite...

Ahh, the sweetness! It makes me love the special pieces in my wardrobe even more. I totally agree about the power of an amazing coat! This is one of those things about aging, where I want everything in my wardrobe to feel like this
