(Tiny) Life Lessons In PRADA 🇮🇹 💎 ❤️🔥
Six genius styling tips from last week's F/W '26 show AND our tiny vintage + second-hand Prada shop is now LIVE 🦄.
Hey, hey! Thank you to everyone who read and shared last week’s double bill of “My Life in Magazines in the ‘90s”. If you’re not a paid subscriber and still want to support what we do here, tap the ❤️ or pass us along to someone who might be into our mini style/space/secondhand world here. We love making new friends!
A few lovely/useful bits before we get into today’s story❤️…
1—This Canvas TOTE—Our refreshed A Tiny Apt. logo is almost finished, and when it is, I’ll be screen-printing a new limited-edition batch of custom ATA totes just in time for spring thrifting season. Do you love it in all-white or maybe with navy contrast?
2—This new TINTED LIP BALM—As a tinted lip balm lunatic, I just noticed on the Nordstrom site this new one from Bobbi Brown, and I think it could be great as one of the gifts on our 2nd annual Brimfield Van Trip on May 9 (if you’re interested in joining us for a full day of treasure hunting at one of the country’s oldest and BEST flea/antiques markets, message us at hi@atinyapt.com…come! come! come!). Oh! And what about this EltaMD tinted spf…everyone seems to love it. Should I try??
3—This FREE vintage GEIGER SWEATER I thrifted last weekend—From the legendary Austrian knitwear brand, this signature boiled wool cardigan is too small for me, but I couldn’t leave it behind at the fantastic SAVERS we hit on our way back from Boston last Saturday. The brass buttons are wonderful and the scalloping on the hem is so pretty. If you’re a small/xs and want it, be the first person to message below in the comments, and I’ll ship it out to you as a gift…cuz I LOVE YOU (Remember, treats like this are one of the perks + spontaneous THANK YOUs for being a paid subscriber, which 100% keeps our little party here going strong:) 🎉.
In the late 1990s back when I really didn’t know much about Prada at all—I found a pair of animal-print Mary Janes at a Marshalls in a mall on Long Island. I think they were $49.99 (the ticket on the sole is still faintly perceptible), and given that was A LOT of money for me at the time, I had to put them on lay-a-way (for all you non-olds like me, that’s basically the original version of Klarna, paying for something in installments over time 🤡).

From a style perspective, I think I have always loved beautiful clothes. But now very happily in my 50s, I realize more and more how much of my adult pleasures have been informed by following the breadcrumbs of Prada…into art and history and architecture and myth—and, mostly, this ongoing notion that two strong ideas can not only coexist together, but they make each other more interesting, too.
I cannot remember how many weeks it took to pay off those Mary Janes, but it was worth it.
They are Perfect.
And thirty years later (maybe much like me), they are smarter and wiser, too. I still have them and wear them and when I look at them, they remind me of what I want my life and wardrobe and environment to be about: an active space to continually rediscover the things that excite me and make me hungry to learn more about how I want to express myself—in my clothes or writing or whatever…—in this particular moment.
Since those shoes, I’ve collected a handful of other Prada pieces over the years/decades that have gradually formed the most cherished cornerstones of my wardrobe (if Mrs. Prada made chairs or tablecloths, I’d collect those, too). Unlike most labels and collections that move in a one-dimensional way, a Prada piece—no matter the era—can take you backwards and forwards…and then sideways and backwards again. At each new turn (or birthday:), there’s always something new and deliciously strange to discover, which inevitably sets us off in a new direction altogether. (This feels a lot like the intersection between Mrs. Prada and Raf Simons, too…how they meet at exactly the right inflection point to bring even more meaning (and friction:) to a collection’s ideas).
This seasonal Prada journey, toggling between vintage references like brocade or heavy lace and futuristic strokes of big shoulders or power clashes of nylon and sequins is the existential reminder I always seem to need—and at exactly the right time—to just be myself. Like everything else we deeply desire throughout our lives, particularly at the most profound moments, Prada is rarely logical. You have to pay attention to the signs…where it’s going, what it’s saying, and how YOU want to translate + wear it, which has literally taught me 80% of what I know today about getting dressed, as well as how I shop and thrift to build a wardrobe that continues to delight me. ✨

Some of my small but mighty Prada collection that I will be adding to and experimenting with FOREVER.
Back in my old life as an editor-in-chief, I used to go to the Prada show in Milan pretty regularly, and seeing Mrs. Prada peek her head out at the end of a show was always thrilling (I once saw her at the Carlyle Hotel when I was meeting a friend for a coffee on a Saturday morning, and THERE SHE WAS in one of her knee-length satin skirts and a navy sweater reading the paper with her feet up just chilling like it was no big whoop…I almost had a STROKE).
Above, THE Mary Janes and a vtg cropped black lace top I just thrifted on eBay because I am certain Prada taught me to notice why it was cool + special in the first place. Below, a beautiful crafty graphic from creative director Jasmine Dowling.
I am never not learning from Prada, whether it’s looking at their ads or their new exhibitions at the Fondazione Prada or their latest collection…the most recent, which dropped last Thursday. ⬇️
In a chaotic world where a $5,600 satin coat can seem unseemly (I still want it), the real riches and FASHION of Prada comes from sussing out all the brilliant layers of learning and ideas we can collect and try on for ourselves, using closet staples we already have or just adding them to our next shopping/thrifting expedition.
My friend and former colleague Erin used to be the (fantastic!!) Fashion News Director at Refinery29, and one of our favorite things to do when a new show debuted was to talk about all the looks we loved most and what we thought they meant or represented in the scheme of ALL these new collections arriving on the scene at once. So, that’s what we did in today’s story—collected our favorite details and styling moves from last Thursday’s latest Prada Fall/Winter 2026 collection. No purchase necessary, just a bunch of fresh ideas for making your older things feel new and shiny and Miuccia again. 🔑 Let’s get into it…xxCb
Look 3/60.
CB: Okay, there are several key elements here that are making this look totally insane in a GREAT way. The heavy-duty menswear style zip-up cardigan + the sheer black tulle slip + the banker blue cuffs + the leg warmers + sequin socks + hiking shoes…somehow, it’s all just working. The two things that stand out most to me and make me want to (cry!!) try them immediately are layering a sheer black skirt over a long sweater—and skinny belting it!—and also wearing a banker blue shirt under everything so those brilliant cuffs can pop out when least expected…IDK this look goes into the canon of genius mashups…it is utterly iconic. 💣
Looks 14 + 29/60

ERIN: In a 2014 interview, Miuccia Prada said “pink is not a serious color,” so it can only really be worn on days you’re in a good mood. I think about that a lot. That POV is probably why she’s so good at making even the most fluorescent pink feel sporty or a little tough—pairing it with something technical, like a chunky zip-up knit or knee-high socks, so it doesn’t feel too too sweet. What I’m really into here is the styling of the scarf on the right. It’s clearly not for staying warm, just looking cool. It reminds me of Episode 5 of Love Story where Ethel Kennedy asked CBK, “Excuse me Carolyn, are you cold?” about a similar scarf/sleeveless dress moment. I like to think the answer was No. It’s just part of the look.
Looks 22 + 47/60

CB: I have a blue banker shirt like this and I honestly have never given it much of a second thought. Until now. NOW I want to see that swipe of blue sticking out of every coat and sweater I own…very extra-long sleeves with a cuff flip = mmmm even better.
Look 22/60
ERIN: So many designers say style > comfort, but not in Miuccia’s world. A hearty full-zip sweater is a little preppy, a little lounge-y, even a little corporate, which means it can be worn in so. many. ways. Particularly with a party skirt ⬆️. Yes to more wearable layering heroes! Please!
Look 13/60
CB: I cannot tell you how much I love seeing this contradiction of a parka/windbreaker and a panel of fur. I am not into fur myself but more so this idea that utility IS eternally glamorous. I immediately started looking for a vtg red parka I could wear with something satin or a faux fur scarf…just for fun. What a vibe…
Look 21/60
ERIN: Prada is at its best when it’s self-referential. This embellished skirt felt so-Fall 2017, look 10 (one of my favorite collections; this pic of Gigi Hadid in the blue/yellow version has been on my moodboard since I first saw it). Beyond nostalgia, my eyes went straight to the cuffs. Blue banker shirt…pink banker shirt…perhaps this is the year we give starchy button-ups new-new life? I have a pink + white striped option by Simone Rocha I bought at my favorite thrift store in DC (s/o Reddz Trading) for $20. I usually wear it as a bathing suit cover-up, but now I might be convinced otherwise…

Prada Mary Jane’s at Marshall’s on Long Island! I used to go to the Marshalls in East Islip, I wish I had your eye! xx
The colour combos are endlessly interesting. Every time.
